How it is made: saponification in one paragraph
Soap is created by a reaction called saponification. An oil or fat is combined with an alkali. The alkali splits the oil's molecules apart and bonds with its fatty acids, producing two things: soap and glycerin. When the alkali is sodium hydroxide, the result is a solid soap, the kind you can hold. When the alkali is potassium hydroxide, the result is a soft soap that dissolves readily in water, which is what you want for a liquid product.
So the name decodes piece by piece. Potassium tells you which alkali was used, and therefore that this is a liquid soap. Sunflowerate tells you the oil: sunflower. Potassium olivate, which often appears alongside it, is the same thing made from olive oil. Potassium cocoate, from coconut oil. Sodium olivate, the solid-soap version of olive oil. Once you know the pattern, an entire family of ingredient names becomes readable at a glance.
A common question: does the finished soap contain potassium hydroxide? In a properly made soap, no. The alkali is consumed by the reaction; it is a raw material, not an ingredient of the final product, in the same way flour and raw eggs are transformed by the time a cake is baked. Manufacturers verify this by formulating with a slight excess of oil and by controlling the finished product's chemistry.

It is also not a fragrance, a preservative, or a conditioning agent. It has one job, cleaning, which is why a formula built around it can stay short.
